Experiments Investigations in student development projects

In the winter semester 2019/20 a combined event of the departments Industrial Information and Ergonomics will take place in which students from three different courses will collaborate. Students of the courses EMP (Development and Management of Digital Product Creation Processes) and AIIT (Applications of Industrial Information Technology) carry out a development project, while students of the Ergonomics Research Module observe and analyze the procedure of the project.  On the one hand, the aim is to gain deeper insights into the knowledge-related work practices of engineering students. On the other hand, suitable methods of social science for capturing knowledge processing in the context of engineering will be identified and tested.

Content and aims of AIIT

For the application of information technology in an industrial environment, the course imparts knowledge on the topics of product development processes and process management, systems engineering and e-business. In addition, students are introduced to systems for product data management (with variant management, complexity management and change management) and computer-aided design (CAD). The knowledge acquired in the lectures is applied in a practice-oriented project. Here, the project participants work in interdisciplinary teams and across modules on the development of electromechanical products and thus get to know the practical challenges of project planning, implementation and management in industry-related applications.

The students will learn to assess the information technology solutions required for the development of products and systems in an industrial environment and will be able to use them in a goal-oriented manner and apply them to engineering problems.

Content and aims of EMP

The course focuses on a holistic view of processes for product development, product validation, production and factory planning in industrial companies with special emphasis on information technology applications and includes the following contents: Core processes of digital product creation and its logics, product data management, processes and their management and industrialization. The knowledge acquired in the lectures will be applied in a practice-oriented project. Here the project participants work in interdisciplinary and cross-module teams on the development of products and learn about the challenges of project planning, implementation and management.

The students should learn how to design, analyze and organize digital product development processes and how to integrate and apply comprehensive topics such as Product Lifecycle Management (PLM), Project Planning and Enterprise Resource Planning (ERP) and digital disciplines derived from them into the company-wide process landscape.

Content and aims of Ergonomics research module:

Analysis of work systems in product development and design

The module is intended to enable students to understand work systems from specific analytical perspectives of human factors research. For this purpose, cooperation with other courses at the TU Berlin is planned. This winter semester 2019/20 is dedicated to technical product development in the engineering sciences:

The semester project "Applications of Industrial Information Technology - AIIT" for engineers deals with the development of a technical product throughout the semester. This event is taught by Lisa Hagedorn, PhD student at the department Industrial Information Technology and offers a great opportunity to get to know the processes from the first implementation idea to the finished product from different perspectives. Lisa Hagedorn still keeps the type of products to be designed and developed in this semester top secret, which will only be revealed at the beginning of the event. But one thing is already certain: you can be curious!

For the participants of this research module on ergonomics, the main focus is on the analysis of the technical product development process with regard to RF-relevant topics such as the knowledge-dynamic activities of the various actors. Therefore, the participants of this module accompany the different product development projects of the engineers throughout the semester and use ethnographic methods to collect the analysis data. The students gain additional insights into the work processes of engineers and ideally support their work as team members by contributing to the product development projects the first knowledge about human-technology interaction acquired in the MSc HF.
